Pharmaceutical Perspectives: Integrative Partners in Health

 

Presenters

Robin DiPasquale, ND, RH (AHG) earned her degree in naturopathic medicine from Bastyr University in 1995 where, following graduation, she became a member of the didactic and clinical faculty. For eight years, she served at Bastyr University as department chair of botanical medicine, teaching and administering to both the naturopathic medicine program and the bachelor’s of science in herbal sciences program. She continues to teach at Bastyr as a visiting adjunct faculty. Dr. DiPasquale is a clinical associate professor in the department of biobehavioral nursing and health systems at the University of Washington in the CAM certificate program. She loves plants, is published nationally and internationally, and teaches throughout the United States and in Italy, about plant medicine. Robin is an anusara influenced yoga teacher, teaching the flow of yoga from the heart. She currently has a general naturopathic medicine practice in Madison, Wisconsin, serves as the Vice President of the Wisconsin Naturopathic Physicians Association, and is working with the University of Wisconsin Integrative Medicine Clinic as an ND consultant.

Alan R. Gaby, M.D. received his undergraduate degree from Yale University, his M.S. in biochemistry from Emory University, and his M.D. from the University of Maryland. He was in private practice for 17 years, specializing in nutritional medicine. He is past-president of the American Holistic Medical Association and gave expert testimony to the White House Commission on Complementary and Alternative Medicine on the cost-effectiveness of nutritional supplements. He is the author of Preventing and Reversing Osteoporosis (Prima, 1994), and The Doctor’s Guide to Vitamin B6 (Rodale Press, 1984), the co-author of The Patient’s Book of Natural Healing (Prima, 1999), and has written numerous scientific papers in the field of nutritional medicine. He has been the contributing medical editor for the Townsend Letter for Doctors since 1985, and contributing editor for Alternative Medicine Review since 1996. Over the past 25 years, he has developed a computerized database of more than 25,000 individually chosen medical journal articles related to the field of natural medicine. He was professor of nutrition and a member of the clinical faculty at Bastyr University in Kenmore, WA, from 1995 to 2002. He is Chief Science Editor for Aisle 7 (formerly Healthnotes, Inc). He has recently completed a 30-year project, a textbook of nutritional medicine, which is now in print.

Dr. Leon Hecht III, N.D. received his doctorate of naturopathic medicine degree from Bastyr University of Natural Health Sciences in 1988. Dr. Hecht has a speciality-oriented naturopathic practice, focusing on endocrinology and chronic infections, including Lyme Disease. He served as President of the New Hampshire Association of Naturopathic Doctors from 1995–2001 and presents at conferences on such topics as diabetes, dietary endocrinology and Lyme Disease. He practices naturopathic medicine at North Coast Family Health, with his wife, Dr. Kristy Fassler, ND, DHANP, and Dr. Jennifer Quinn, ND.

Enrico Liva, RPh, ND graduated from Temple University School of Pharmacy in 1975. In 1978 he attended the National College of Naturopathic Medicine. He graduated in 1982 and was awarded a Doctor of Naturopathic Medicine degree. He has been in private practice as a naturopathic physician for 25 years and is the managing physician at The Connecticut Center for Health in Middletown, and West Hartford, CT. Dr. Liva is a founding member and past board member of the American Association of Naturopathic Physicians. He is a past board member and 2 time past president of the Connecticut Society of Naturopathic Physicians. Dr. Liva is President & CEO of Vital Nutrients, an industry leader in the manufacturing of high quality natural products.

Dr. Malik is a 2005 graduate of Bastyr University. He has licenses in Connecticut and Vermont where he practices in small communities as both a general practitioner and specialist. Dr. Malik focuses on integrating evidenced based medicine, traditional therapeutic knowledge, and common sense to expedite diagnosis, management, and treatment. With this approach, his goal is to help patients find the shortest path to wellness that utilizes all of the treatment options available to them. He calls this approach Comprehensive Natural Healthcare. Dr. Malik’s favorite naturopathic principle is doctor as teacher. He regularly provides free presentations in his community on popular health topics, writes articles for local newspapers, has had radio programs, and published podcasts that inform the public and promote the field of naturopathy. In his practice, Dr. Malik has seen many patients with auto-immune conditions that were mis-diagnosed. Auto-immunity can be difficult to identify for both the general practitioner and the rheumatologist because it’s symptoms can be mild and mimic other diseases. The right tests are hard to order and interpret and test results are usually inconsistent.

Dr. Mona Morstein received her B.S. summa cum laude in Foods and Nutrition from Arizona State University, in Tempe, AZ, and her ND, from National College of Naturopathic Medicine in Portland, OR. Following graduation from NCNM in 1988, she did a year Family Practice residency at their out-patient clinic. She then moved to Great Falls, MT and established a successful private practice that she ran for 13 years. During that time, Dr. Morstein wrote regular newspaper articles for the Great Falls Tribune, had a weekly cable TV access show called “Natural Health”, and spoke at more than 100 meetings on various illnesses. In 2002, Dr. Morstein was asked to join the faculty of Southwest College of Naturopathic Medicine by their president, and subsequently became an associate professor there. She is now Chair of Nutrition, Associate Professor, Supervising Physician of Students in the out-patient medical clinic at SCNM and has her own busy private practice. Dr. Morstein has a family practice focus, seeing all ages of patients, both sexes, for all acute and chronic diseases. She is recognized in the naturopathic profession as an expert on pre-diabetes and diabetes, and also specializes on gastroenterology and female health. She treats patients using the modalities of nutrition, western botanical medicine, homeopathy, hydrotherapy, nutraceuticals, lifestyle counseling, and aturopathic manipulation therapy. As part of SCNM, she is still an active international speaker, speaking at multiple conferences yearly, and has been ublished in numerous magazine and newspaper articles. She has begun teaching her own created and organized, well received conference called “Insulin Intensive Seminar”.

Mario Roxas, ND is a practicing naturopathic physician in Sandpoint, Idaho and Director of Clinical Support Services at Thorne Research, Inc. He also serves as Associate Editor of the peer-reviewed medical journal, The Alternative Medicine Review. Dr. Roxas received his formal training in naturopathic medicine at the National College of Natural Medicine in Portland, Oregon, where he also completed his residency in Family Practice. Dr. Roxas has worked in the nutrition and botanical medicine industry for over 10 years, and has been a consultant to several leading nutriceutical companies. He has written and lectured to diverse audiences nationwide on various aspects of clinical nutrition, botanical medicine, and naturopathic therapeutics. In his spare time, Dr. Roxas enjoys travelling the world with his wife and son.

Jared M. Skowron, ND is a national expert in natural medicine for children. He is author of Fundamentals of Naturopathic Pediatrics, the definitive text on evidence-based natural remedies for children’s health conditions, and his new book with Rodale Publishing will be published in fall 2011. He is faculty at University of Bridgeport, where he is Professor of Pediatrics and founder of the Pediatric & Autism Teaching Clinic. He was recently on Animal Planet, Dogs 101 as a medical advisor, and his article, “10 Ten Myths of Vitamin D” was chosen as one of the Best Vitamin D Articles by the Vitamin D Council.

Eric Yarnell, ND (Bastyr University, 1996) is assistant professor of botanical medicine at Bastyr University. He is a co-founder of the Boucher Institute of Naturopathic Medicine in Vancouver, BC. Dr. Yarnell is chief financial officer of Healing Mountain Publishing, a provider of natural medicine textbooks, and vice president of Heron Botanicals. He previously served as chair of the department of botanical medicine at the Southwest College of Naturopathic Medicine and helped edit the Journal of Naturopathic Medicine. His published works include Naturopathic Urology and Men’s Health, Clinical Botanical Medicine 2nd ed, Naturopathic Gastroenterology, The A-Z Guide to Drug-Herb-Vitamin Interactions, and The Natural Pharmacy. In his private practice he focuses on men’s health, urology, and nephrology.
